Richard,
I suggest that you go to
/etc/vga/libvga.config and near the beginning of the file you will most
likely find a line starting with:
Helper /dev/svga
Just below that should be a line containing near its beginning the word
NoHelper
and this is probably commented out with ## so it looks something like
## NoHelper
Uncomment it [remove the ##] and run vgatest again and your error messages
Is svgalib_helper module loaded?
should disappear.
You need to be root to run Linrad anyway, as Leif points out.

So where is linrad looking for its libs, I'd a thought /usr/lib was a
normal place ????, arh but it's SuSe time ,why the extra layer of
directory !!!!!!
If mknod is run manually linrad starts to run, and it need to be run
manually each time the machine
is booted as uDev is used with Mandriva 2006, and svgalib_helper needs
to be put in modprobe.conf.
There proof that the svga tarball is a real pain in the butt
