Ahh now that I read it properly I see what I have done (he says sheepishly)!
I mistakenly thought that the files had to be there before the links could
be made, not that the ln command actually created the files! Sometimes I am
so stupid I forget to breath.

On this page the instructions are:
The runtime libraries are placed at /usr/local/lib but they are
needed at /usr/lib. Symbolic links solve the problem.
Type:ln -s /usr/local/lib/libvga.so.1.4.3 /usr/lib/libvga.so.1
Type:ln -s /usr/local/lib/libvgagl.so.1.4.3 /usr/lib/libvgagl.so.1
This is how libvga.so.1 is created
