NO NO NO!!!!!
svgalib is not any problem at all. There are several ways of getting it
running properly, I have shown you two of them and Roger has shown
one more. Rogers solution it the one to prefer for the future:-)
The problem is OSS. Mandriva 2006.1-0.3 does not supply the kernel
headers in a way that fits the the expectations of OSS. Mandriva has
its own format for kernel information and we have to allow some time for
the OSS people. Therefore "it is a bad idea to use the very latest distribution
because it takes some time for the hardware related groups (=OSS) to adapt
to changes made in the kernel"
This has nothing to do with the kernel version. The one I find on my fresh
download is 2.6.12-13mdk (It seems that the Mandriva kernel is not so stable
right now since you have already 17mdk)
By the way, I am using Debian with a kernel version of 2.4.27-386.
The reason for this is that RFspace has not yet supplied the device
driver for 2.6 kernels for the FT245 chip that is used in the
SDR-14 for USB communication. Despite the old kernel, I keep my system
updated, Debian supports both 2.4.27 AND 2.6.8 as the kernel for their
latest "stable release".
GNU/Linux 3.1 (a.k.a. sarge) was released on 6th of June, 2005.
Getting started with Debian is a bit more demanding as compared
to the commercial distributions, but it is a good way of avoiding
problems.
