I did auto complete Joe just the way it downloaded, I agree it does

Well, I just tried
[jfitzgerald@xxxxxx ~]$ wget http://www.svgalib.org/svgalib-1.4.3.tar.gz
--10:33:33-- http://www.svgalib.org/svgalib-1.4.3.tar.gz
=> `svgalib-1.4.3.tar.gz'

[jfitzgerald@xxxxxx ~]$ tar xfvz svgalib-1.4.3.tar.gz
svgalib-1.4.3/
svgalib-1.4.3/0-INSTALL
svgalib-1.4.3/0-README
svgalib-1.4.3/Makefile
svgalib-1.4.3/Makefile.cfg
svgalib-1.4.3/demos/
svgalib-1.4.3/demos/Makefile
...
and all was well. Perhaps autocomplete is tricking you? Note that if
you try again, autocomplete only goes as far as 'svgalib-1.4.3' - the
name of the directory you just untarred. Make sure you rm -rf the old
svgalib directory (or type out the full filename)
