Thanks for the info!

I will download a truly new distribution of Debian and give it another try.

It sure was disconcerting to go through the whole process and find a  
system of RedHat 7.2 vintage sitting there ;)

I will proceed as you suggest and let you know how and when I get things  
working [but NOT bug you with 'help me, help me' emails] ;)
