[linrad] More Debian/svgalib-1.9.21/new Knoppix

I apologize for not being able to contribute more to Leif's current issue with the install.

This afternoon I decided to leave my Fedora Core 3 system as such, as I have had no problems with it and the Debian XWindows resolution/color scheme is inferior at this point.

I did install Debian on my other P4 and I now have Debian there working with Linrad and XWindows both.

I have the following notes:

My 'boot file' for Fedora is /etc/rc.d/rc.local and contains:

#!/bin/bash
touch /var/lock/subsys/local
modprobe svgalib_helper
cd /usr/lib/oss/bin
./ossmix -d1 envy24.ratelock OFF
./ossmox -d1 envy24.rate 96000
cd /

My 'boot file' for Debian is /etc/rcS.d/S80w3sz and contains:

#!/bin/bash

modprobe svgalib_helper

cp -a /etc/udev/devices/svga* /dev/

rmmod es1371
rmmod snd_ens1371
rmmod snd_ac97_codec
rmmod snd_pcm
rmmod snd_rawmidi
rmmod snd_page_alloc
rmmod snd_timer
rmmod snd_seq_device
rmmod snd
rmmod soundcore
rmmod snd_ice1712
rmmod snd_ice17xx_ak4xxx
rmmod snd_ak4xxx_adda
rmmod snd_cs8427
rmmod snd_i2c
rmmod snd_mpu401_uart

cd /usr/lib/oss/bin

./soundon

./ossmix envy24.ratelock OFF
./ossmix envy24.rate 96000
cd /

...........................................
I could not find a way to keep the modules from loading [except for deleting the soundcor.ko file], and so I had to remove the modules before running OSS. The order of removal is of course important due to dependencies.

I tried making a skip_module file just as Ramiro suggested, and put it in the /etc/discover.d directory but it didn't work. I then put it in the /etc/discover.d/2.6 directory, and it still didn't work. I found no files in /etc/modprobe.d or /etc/modutils that had useful contents. I looked at the following files in /etc/ without success: discover.conf, discover.conf-2.6, modules, modules.conf. So I let the modules install and then remove them.
..........................................

The line I needed in /etc/vga/vgalib.conf is
mdev /dev/input/mice
I had left off the mdev in my previous note.

Also, in my previous note I had moved the nasm install to before the kernel-header update. I don't think that was a good idea.

..........................................

svgalib-1.9.21 is available and I have it running with Linrad under both Fedora Core 3 and Debian. "1.9.21 - Module changes for compiling with really new kernels. VESA driver now works in NO_HELPER mode. Patches from Stas Sergeev to get VESA driver to work on some cards, and from Sergey E. Galanov to support programmable mode timings with VESA driver and VBE3 cards".

I found no new issues with it.

..........................................

There is a new version of Knoppix: 3.8.1. I downloaded it from:
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
choosing the first mirror on the list:
ftp.uni-kl.de and then the file
KNOPPIX_V3.8.1-2005-04-08-EN.iso
Not all of the mirrors have the new version.

This installed on both my new P4 with the Extreme Graphics 2, and gave me XWindows though I had to tweak it to get nice resolution and color, and on my old P4 with Radeon card. I got internet access with both with no problem.
I haven't yet figured out how to add svgalib and linrad etc to the cd, but I hope to do that sometime. I ran out of 'playtime' today after doing the above.

I again apologize for not being able to help more with Leif's problem. I wish I were smarter and knew more.

I will keep working on the Debian instruction list, adding suggestions as received. I think that whatever we put together will likely only 'easily' work for hardware that is neither too new or too old :(

Roger
