[linrad] Re: Knoppix CD

Hi Alberto,

The mailing list does not accept my attachments so I will send them direct

I will send you some of the files that everybody in the past always wanted to
see in order to help me..

The machine I am using is a 2.4 GHz P4 with 512 Mb Ram, Nothing special I think
and it will run your programs. Win98SE installed on the main drive.

Linrad is running as on previous distributions, mostly Mandrake, last 10.1 if I remember
well..
2 sound cards installed, on board Via82..and Delta44.
Alsa is installed from the W3SZ CD but I think it really installed in Knoppix
I am not sure about OSS.

Linrad reports:
00 /dev/dsp 5000 - 192000 Hz 4 Channels 16 bits RD WO 16 bits !!! I suppose that is because of Alsa?
01 /dev/dsp0 5000 - 192000 Hz 4 Channels 16 bits RD WO
02 /dev dsp1 48000 - 48000 Hz 2 Channels 16 bits WR This is dark 02 /dev/dsp 48000 - 48000 Hz 2 Channles 16 RDONLY RDWR This is lit

Linrad detects the Delta44 and is in use when running Linrad, I can change the sample freq and it reacts.

If I do as root:
# alsamixer, it shows the alsa mixer with 4 ADC and 4 DAC controls, but they do not listen or do anything

In Linrad RDONLY

The topbar says Delta44 et etc. So it seems the alsamixer is coupled or configured for the Delta44 but from there on I am lost. Always fighting the mixer problem. I just can't get it it seems..

I wished some GURU would write a paper on how to systematically set up sound cards and mixers. As you might have seen there are web pages after web pages about sound cards not working ( no sound ) or not being detected and the same for mixers. There ought to be a logical way
how to do this!

Also the sampling freq of the onboard card is locked on 48 kHz In the older Lintrad versions that was not
the case I do not know the reason probably by design in Linrad.

I have not been able to find a way to set the volume of the onboard card. It might be running on 50 % or so. I do not think it is full out, but I am not sure, There is volume control in Linrad and then of course
The volume on the speaker.

I will include the dmesg file. no Delta there.

Lspci shows every thing that is installed

Lsmod shows modules for the delta44 as well as the other card.

I would think you should be able to reproduce most of this, I think.

One more thing If you look in the dmesg file there is a notice about interrupts not being
properly being distributed and how to remedy it ( Knoppix pci=routeirq )
I have no idea what this means in terms of the sound one way or another,

The installed real real analog Linux modem does not wotk. I have SuSe 9.2 on the other drive and Suse is handling the modem as it should, SuSE also does not show this IRQ problem. Yast in Suse btw detects everything there is to know about both sound
cards.

I hope this is of some use to you

I downloaded the ISO image and burnt a CD. It boots ok on my
Asus A7N8X-X motherboard, and Linrad runs, but the Delta 44
sound card is not 'seen', while the nVidia nForce chipset on the
motherboard is. Is this how Knoppix is supposed to work, and,
if yes, what are the steps needed to have the Delta 44 card properly
managed ?

Thanks
