   OK,  you are right on the output part. The stereo card should
   have 2 channels all the way through. It is a requirement for 
   playing stereo .wav files It should work with one card in 
   that case.
   In case of the delta44 though I assume that card should also
   have 4 output channels so to say. having a second card for 
   playing the audio provides freedom in selecting sampling freq's  
  
   In my case with the AC97,  Linrad reports 2 channels.
   Though in reporting it does not report the 2 as the same. 
   Are you able to play stereo on you laptop?
