The work in this area with DSP, extreme frequency accuracy and stability might well be a precursor for things to come in amateur radio.
Low power, small antennas in relation to the frequency and noisy environments will be more and more factors that play for most in the amateur community. On the other hand, it places communication very close to what most of use consider to be "RADIO" as in the beginning, almost 100 years ago.
Apart from its specific propagation domain, these techniques could be used through
tha amateur radio spectrum. Case and point by monitoring the IARU Beacon Network on
14100 kHz, see also: HF beacons ,
Some other beacons are listed here:
Many of the 20 meter beacons for example, can be copied here in California just about every evening, even the 0.1 Watt output level transmissions over thousands of miles!. Often, these signals are the only signals on the band!
The advantages of beacons are many:
- The beacon transmits at known times
- The beacon's frequency is known.
- The position is known.
- The beacon's antenna and output are known.
- The beacon is sending ID's.
