PROGRAM: Microwave Antennas by John Sanford. John will give an overview of principles for designing effective antennas at microwave frequencies.
Dr. John R. Sanford is head of Smartwaves International designing systems and components for wireless communications. Previously he was senior engineer at Endgate where he designed antennas and packaging for millimeter wave radio links. He was a professor at Chalmers University of Technology, was head of the antenna group at Huber & Suhner AG, and was a research engineer with the Georgia Tech Research Institute.
Nominations and voting: This is the meeting for election of 1999 Officers and Board Members. There will first be a round of additional nominations. Paid members, please come and vote.
DIRECTIONS: The meeting place will be the Lockheed Auditorium in bldg. 202 on Hanover St. in Palo Alto, California. Access Hanover from Page Mill Road (between 280 and El Camino). Follow Hanover as it curves right and up the hill. Watch for the Lockheed sign indicating Bldg. 202 on the left side, about 2/3 of the way up the hill.

50 MHz & Up Group Minutes
Meeting of January 12, 1999
The 50 MHz & Up Group held the first meeting of 1999 at the Lockheed-Martin auditorium on the evening of January 12, 1999. Executives and directors present were: Jim Moss, N9JIM, Vice President; Will Jensby, W0EOM, Treasurer; Bill Ogilvie, KQ6FY, Secretary; and Jeffrey Pawlan WA6KBL, Bob Johnson KF6KVG, Sam Wood K6MSR, directors. There were 20 members and visitors in attendance.
The meeting began with several announcements from the membership: Someone in the 50 MHz & Up Group is looking for a Wavetek 907 service manual. Sam Wood, K6MSR has contributed several channel banks to the Group. It was noted that RA enterprises has started advertising in the group's newsletter and is offering a 10% discount to members who bring in the ad. They are located at the E. end of Walsh Ave, in Santa Clara.
Nominations were held for officers and directors. The results are:

Any additional nominations can be made at the next meeting, Feb 16 (7:30 at the Lockheed-Martin Auditorium). Concluding any additional nominations, voting will commence for this year's slate of officers.
A talk was delivered by Austin Lesea, AB6VU, titled "Higher Order Modulation Methods". He has worked in all areas of the electronic industry , for the past 22 years. Early on in his career he taught at UC Berkeley and worked with Ken Thompson on Unix developments. Austin in has developed precise frequency control and digital phase locked loop designs, for high speed data transmission applications.
Austin's talk was very informative and interesting. He presented very technical material in a clear, easy to understand way. This led to some good discussions.

Elections for 1999 coming up
The 50 MHz and Up Group of Northern California, Inc. holds elections of officers at the February meeting. The first round of nominations for officers and board members took place at the January meeting. More nominations and the elections take place at the February meeting prior to the voting. You must be a paid member of the Group at the time of the meeting to nominate or vote. Dues can be paid at the meeting for anyone who's membership has expired.
Please look at the current list of nominations in the January minutes above. Think about any additional nominations you would like to make.
Please come to the February meeting and exercise your vote.
Annual Membership renewals
I have arranged our membership database, so that we now print your membership expiration date at the top of the address on your newsletter. Please look at the information on this newsletter. Contact me if you feel the expiration date is not correct.
If your membership has recently expired or if it will expire in the next few months, you should have received this newsletter in an envelope. Included is a reply envelope addressed to our treasurer, Will Jensby. This can be used to renew your membership. Be sure to include your name so that we can properly record your payment.
