50 MHz & Up Group Minutes

Meeting of Mar. 12, 1999 Minutes

The 50 MHz & Up Group held its March meeting at the Lockheed-Martin auditorium on the evening of March 12, 1999. Executives and directors present were: Rex Allers KK6MK, President; Jim Moss, N9JIM, Vice President; Will Jensby, W0EOM, Treasurer; Bill Ogilvie, KQ6FY, Secretary; Art Lange W6RXQ, director. There were 16 members and visitors in attendance.

The meeting began with the announcement of plans for a new beacon for 10 and 24 Ghz., to be situated in the South Bay. Bob Johnson, KF6KVG, showed a 10 Ghz unit that he had built.

Jim Moss, N9JIM, gave a talk on the new FCC Guidelines for Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields for Amateur Radio Stations. The FCC now requires all Amateurs to perform a survey of their station, to evaluate its' effective radiated power, on all bands. This can be done with a simple worksheet, that can be downloaded from the FCC web site.

WA6KBL EME Station Update

Jeffrey Pawlan, WA6KBL, our board member has been working hard for months to build a 1.2 and 10 GHz EME station. The goal has been to accomplish this very quickly to fulfill an ambition of Ron Hopkins, N6BQ, who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The station is based on a 5 meter Scientific Atlanta dish mounted on a WWII vintage SCR-584 radar pedestal. Current status: the tower is up, the SCR-584 is almost ready for use, heavy-duty hardware has been built for mounting the dish, the dish has been assembled, and installation of all the antenna assembly is close at hand..

Here is a note from Jeffrey and a picture...

Attached is a photo of Monica (KQ6PY) tightening the hub bolts on the 5 meter EME dish. She graciously agreed to squeeze into the hub to do this as we were all too large to fit.

73s,

Jeffrey

The project is moving along but much still remains to be done. Please contact Jeffrey if you would like to help with this project in any way.

Picnic Gathering this year

Our yearly picnic will be held at the Park Area at National Semiconductor on Saturday, June 26. This is the weekend of the 1999 ARRL Field Day, so we plan to set up some rigs and make a minor effort to participate as a group this year. Try to keep that date open. We look forward to everyone coming, whether you want to operate on field day or just visit. Contact me if you have any suggestions or if you are willing to help coordinate our activities.

Annual Membership renewals

I have arranged our membership database, so that we now print your membership expiration date at the top of the address on your newsletter. Please look at the information on this newsletter. Contact me if you feel the expiration date is not correct.

If your membership has recently expired or if it will expire in the next few months, you should have received this newsletter in an envelope. Included is a reply envelope addressed to our treasurer, Will Jensby. This can be used to renew your membership. Be sure to include your name so that we can properly record your payment.

Dues: $15 for one year, or $25 for two years. You can also renew at the meetings.
